Found your site yesterday and have read quite a lot of your posts.
We began 2 hives this spring and managed to harvest ~ 35 lbs from one of them. Hopefully we can get them through the winter here in MN. It's been a very mild fall so far.

I have a foam insulated super under the telescoping covers on my hives. I don't put bales over the top for ease of access in late winter. I figured the straw bales would freeze together and be a bugger (and heavy) to remove.
In what cardinal direction are the open sides of your hives facing?

since you're not worried about getting mice into the hives from the bales--why not put bales over them, too, for extra insulation?
